Voss Novelty Helmet

Helmets are a controversial topic.  Some people prefer full face, some want three-quarter, some desire half-helms and even others wear novelty helmets. 19 states require helmets for all motorcycle riders.  The legal criterion for what is an approved helmet varies by each of those states.  Helmet Laws by State is a good resource if you are curious about your state.  The U.S. government relies on the honor system for helmet manufactures to meet DOT standards, they do not check them.  Most DOT helmets are designed for crashes at 45 MPH or less; above that speed a DOT helmet is not designed to provide any real protection.

That said, all I can evaluate for this site are items that I personally use, or that my close friends have significant experience with.  I personally would prefer to wear no helmet, but WA state requires one so I wear a flat black German novelty helmet made by Voss.

Performance

This novelty helmet sits nice a low when worn, so that the gap between your glasses and the helmet is almost non-existent.  This helps keep rain from hitting above my glasses and running into my face.  It also seems to not catch the wind very easy so it sits firm.  It’s very comfortable and very light weight.  Since it is not DOT approved, it does not have the weight of other half-helms.  The fact that the German style flares out greatly helps with rain. All I am evaluating with this review is the riding performance of this helmet, not it’s safety performance.  It is not a DOT helmet and is not recommended by the U.S. government.  Use at your own risk.

Appearance

Basic flat black in color.  Also available in Chrome, Gloss black and Black Chrome.

Durability

The exterior of the helmet holds up well but the padding inside only seems to last about 1.5 years of almost daily use. The inside padding begins to stretch and split from the sides.  I own two of these helmets at all times, same size, because during the winter I wear a beanie under my helmet so when the weather is warm I switch to the other one because the one I wear with a beanie is a bit stretched out.  The cost is only $39.99 for this helmet so it’s cheap to buy a new one every year.
